American carmaker General Motors has recalled 4,13,418 Chevrolet Cruze sedans over concerns of possible fire through liquids trapped in the engine compartment.
However in India where the car is sold under the same brand is not impacted by this global recall.
GM India spokesperson P Balendran said, "The recall is applicable only in North America, Canada and for few cars in Israel. The Cruze sedan sold in India carries a different engine and is not part of this recall."
The voluntary recall covers both manual and automatic transmissions models built in the US from the start of production till May 2012.
The Chevrolet Cruze is one of the best-selling models in the General Motors portfolio and has tasted good success in India also. It is the second largest sold car in the mid-sedan segment, after Toyota's Corolla and also competes with the likes of Volkswagen Jetta, Honda Civic and Skoda Laura.
According to the GM international press release, the automaker has received reports of about 30 engine compartment fires and these were 'linked to improper oil changes and other fluids that were trapped in the engine unit."
However no crashes or injuries have been reported in connection with the fires, the company added. The safety recall follows a preliminary investigation conducted by the US road authority, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It started probe in April this year on reports of two engine compartment fires in Cruze models of 2011.
The company will modify the engine shield under the vehicle, and the repairs should take about 30 minutes at a GM dealership, without any charge to the owners.
