South Cone Alliance LLC launched operations last April. Its members –seven CROs located in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Perú and Panama- joined their efforts under the banner “One contract, multinational reach, local focus”
To deliver integral corporate solutions through the merging of their services and the standarization of their operating procedures and rates, is the core of the strategy developed by the new venture, according to Carlos Cáceres, CEO of Clinical Trials Support (CTS), one of the founding members of South Cone Alliance.
Future customers will establish a general agreement with South Cone thus bypassing multiple dealings with local agents in different countries
Setting up a multinational company
“South Cone will be able to deliver a full range of services in each of the countries and cities where its members are located”, says Cáceres. The multinational will outsource some services within the group, in case they are not available in one specific location. In this way it is expected that South Cone will reduce idle capacity taking advantage of its local strengths.
How was this initiative born?
“The problem was how to compete against size”, adds Cáceres. “Least than a year ago, Clinical Trials Support was working together with Gerardo Uviedo, an Argentinian MD who is president of Pentha Research. One of the results of that fruitful collaboration was the birth of this project”, acknowledges Cáceres, “that was developed upon the concepts of local markets knowledge, complementary strengths and information and communication technology for outreach and team work”. “One thing was still lacking, concludes Cáceres, and that was the need to set foot in USA to get new business inflow, so we decided to establish the new venture there”. A decision that might turn out to be very convenient for South Cone’s potential customers since American laws and jurisdiction will be thus applicable.
How do you manage a company that is located in USA but the work is done in Chile?
“The company has attorneys at law as agents in USA and services will be provided on a regional basis. CEOs of the local companies members are part of the Board of the new company and the Corporate CEO will run the company and manage business contracts that will be executed by company members in each country. Internet will do the rest”.
What about the future?
“South Cone Alliance got everything that is needed to succeed: multinational coverage and contracting and local knowledge”, are Cáceres final remarks.
South Cone has offices in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Perú and Panama, and although the company is still young, its professionals -including MDs, engineers, qualified nurses, biologists, chemists and biochemists- average 10 years experience in clinical research.
