Over 400 students have registered for the 'Placement Fair, 2011' being organized by the Goa University in collaboration with The Times of India, on April 30. Careers in mining, pharma, BPOs and banking, in nearly 30 Goan as well as multinational companies, await students at the fair.
Final year post-graduate and graduate students of the Goa University and its affiliated non-professional colleges respectively, will be eligible to apply for registration to participate in the fair. Final-year students of BA, BSc, BCom, BCA, BBA, BMM, BSW are eligible to apply.
"Previously, some of our departments like management, computer applications and chemistry would conduct placements for their students. We are organizing centralized placement at the university for the first time, in association with The Times of India. The response has been overwhelming. Now, we have a situation where more and more companies want to participate but we have had to ask them to join the next phase of recruitment because of space and time constraints," assistant university registrar Rajesh Bhatikar said.
By Thursday, 27 companies and 400 students had registered to participate in the Placement Fair and the number of students wishing to participate was fast rising, said Bhatikar. "Other than the companies offering jobs in mining, banking, insurance, IT/BPO and pharma sectors, we have also been able to rope in NGOs to interact with students from the social sciences division and some recruitment agencies which are representing some reputed companies are also participating," he added. The registration forms for the Placement Fair have been uploaded by the Goa University on its website. The participating companies and the sectors in which these companies are hiring have also been listed on the website. Students have to select the companies they would like to interact with and inform the Goa University about it through an email to placement@unigoa.ac.in by 1pm on April 28.
On the day of the Placement Fair, which will begin from 9am onwards, students will have to carry sets of their registration forms complete with photograph and signature and attested copies of their qualifications from Class X to graduation or post-graduation level. Students will have to carry a set of documents for each company they will be applying to.
While Sesa Goa Ltd will be looking for candidates from the earth science and geology departments, Wipro seeks to hire students of computer applications, and VodaFone Telecom will be hiring students from the business management and commerce streams at the Placement Fair.
Fomento Ltd, Anglo-Eastern Shipping, Sutherland, Patni Computers Ltd, Watsons Ltd, Lupin Ltd, Aventis, HDFC Banking, Dhanalaxmi Bank, Yes Bank and Standard Chartered are some of the other companies participating in the fair.
