Apple Music Executive Ian Rogers Leaves After Debut of Service

Apple Inc. said music executive Ian Rogers is leaving the company, a surprise departure coming a couple of months after the debut of a new service he helped create.

Rogers joined Apple with the company’s $3 billion purchase of Beats Electronics in August 2014, and oversaw the online radio operation of Apple Music, including the station Beats 1.

He is leaving for an unspecified job in Europe, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be named.

Rogers didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but tweeted out a link to the iTunes page for the band Europe.

Rogers was part of the team at Apple charged with grabbing a piece of the streaming music business, a growth area for the industry as physical and digital sales decline. Beats 1, a live, global radio station, has drawn praise from musicians and industry executives.

Apple has no plans to replace him, said the person, who described the departure as an abrupt move that startled people at the company. Apple Music began service in June.

The company is offering a three-month free trial to the $10 to $14 monthly service, and told USA Today this month that 11 million people had signed up.

Spotify said in June it has more than 75 million active users, and more than 20 million paying customers. The Financial Times reported Rogers’s departure earlier Friday.
